Many patients assume midwives only provide care during pregnancy. In reality, Certified Nurse-Midwives offer comprehensive, lifelong reproductive health care, including annual exams, contraception, and menopause management.
Lifelong Care Beyond Pregnancy
Certified Nurse-Midwives are trained to provide primary care and full-scope reproductive health services for women from adolescence through post-menopause. You do not need to be pregnant or planning a pregnancy to establish care with a midwife. Many patients choose a CNM as their primary gynecological provider for their entire adult life.
Annual Exams and Preventive Screenings
A midwife performs all the standard components of an annual well-woman visit. This includes clinical breast exams, pelvic exams, Pap smears and HPV testing for cervical cancer screening, and testing for sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Midwives emphasize health education, taking time to discuss nutrition, exercise, and overall wellness during these preventive visits.
Contraception and Family Planning
As advanced practice prescribers, CNMs offer comprehensive family planning services. They can prescribe oral contraceptive pills, administer birth control injections, and insert or remove long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs) such as intrauterine devices (IUDs) and subdermal arm implants. They also provide counseling on natural family planning and fertility awareness methods.
Menopause and Hormonal Health
Midwifery care extends well into the perimenopausal and menopausal years. CNMs help patients navigate hormonal changes, manage symptoms like hot flashes and vaginal dryness, and provide counseling on bone health. They are qualified to prescribe and manage hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for patients who require medical symptom management.
