AHCCCS coverage parity
Under federal Medicaid rules and Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System policy, Certified Nurse-Midwife services are covered maternity benefits across AHCCCS Complete Care plans. Plans such as Banner-University Family Care, Mercy Care, and UnitedHealthcare Community Plan reimburse prenatal visits, labor management, and postpartum care on par with physician coverage.
Commercial plans and APRN billing
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona, Aetna, Cigna, and UnitedHealthcare contract with Certified Nurse-Midwives as licensed Advanced Practice Registered Nurses. Prenatal care, labor attendance, vaginal birth, and postpartum visits process as standard in-network medical benefits when the practice holds a contract.
The Science Behind It: why you see two charges
A hospital birth has two billing streams. The facility fee covers the labor room, nursing, equipment, and supplies. The professional fee covers the Certified Nurse-Midwife and any collaborating physicians for prenatal care, labor, and birth. Reading an explanation of benefits without that split makes families think they were double billed when they were not.
Verify both the midwife and the hospital before the first visit
Confirm the midwifery practice is in network for your exact plan. Then confirm the birth hospital (for example Chandler Regional, Mercy Gilbert, Banner Gateway, Banner Thunderbird, or Abrazo Arrowhead) is an in-network facility. Privileges without network status still leave you with a surprise bill.
